Elaine Ewing is owner of Rhinebeck Pilates, a fully equipped pilates studio located in the center of Rhinebeck, NY.
She is a Certified Pilates Instructor and Certified Walk-ilates Instructor.
Elaine began practicing pilates to suppliement her yoga practice in 1998 while living in New York City as an art student at the School of Visual Arts. While attending school, she decided to become certified in pilates to provide her with some part time work along side her other work as a fine arts printmaker. Needless to say, what started out as a part time job as since become a career, a passion, and a full-time business!
Elaine is certified to teach pilates through the Ellie Herman certification program, taught by Erica Essner and Jessie Zalla in NYC. Since then, she has studied and practiced pilates extensively through workshops and classes taught by master teachers Bob Liekens, Alycea Ungaro, Irene Dowd, Jennifer DeLuca, Caitlin Cook, Michael and Ton, Ellie Herman, and Juliet Harvey, to name a few.
In June 2008, she attended the Mount Sinai’s FAMI workshop, a renowned workshop about functional anatomy for movement and injuries (FAMI), taught
by anatomists, physicians, and expert pilates and yoga instructors.
In 2009, Elaine became a certified Walk-ilates instructor. Improper walking and running biomechanics are the main causes of aches, pains, and injuries. Walk-ilates incorporates special releases and stretches using the foam roller, Pilates exercises, standing balances, and gait analysis. Lower back, neck, knee, foot,
and hip strains can drastically improve just by learning how to walk and carry
the body properly.
Elaine’s style of teaching is not only influenced by her studies with pilates teachers, it is also heavily influenced by the Alexander Technique, which she
has practiced extensively with Hope Gillerman, Joan Arnold, and Judith Muir.
Prior to owning Rhinebeck Pilates, Elaine taught at various studios in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Hamptons, and the Hudson Valley. She continues to teach pilates mat classes at Columbia-Greene Community College, in Hudson, NY.
Elaine also runs this blog- Heads Up On Your Body- a lively and informative blog on pilates, health, and fitness. Her goals with this blog are to keep pilates students informed on happenings at Rhinebeck Pilates, news in the pilates world, and to pass along the history and facts behind classical pilates.
When she is not teaching or doing pilates, Elaine enjoys running, hiking, taking yoga classes, and gardening. Besides staying active, she enjoys creating art in her home studio and spending time with her family.
